Sanders Design team rebrand the Cornish Language Fellowship
When the United Kingdom and European Union governments announced new support and funding for the Cornish Language, the Cornish Language Fellowship - An Kowethas - approached Sanders Design for a culturally definitive branding of their organisation.
An Kowethas promotes the Cornish language in everyday life, running language weekends, producing learning and reading materials, and a monthly magazine in Cornish. An Kowethas’ required an up-to-date and recognisable image that would reflect the vibrant and dynamic nature of the Cornish Language, a Celtic language which share‘s its origins with Welsh. The new image would also appeal to the rising demand in interest from younger people.
‘We have a track record in providing design and communication services for organisations that carry an educational and cultural messages, and as a Cornish company were aware of the Government language framework. We feel that their branding better reflects the language’s distinct and compelling history, whilst communicating their progressive approach' said Martin Sanders, team leader and director of Sanders Design.
The new logo and re-branding was launched on 1st June 2005 at the Hall for Cornwall's Assembly Rooms, and before an invited audience of press and local councillors, An Kowethas chair Dr Loveday Jenkin said: ‘'Cornish is seen by many as a dynamic and organic means of communication. It is essential that we present the Cornish language as an accessible, engaging, and enjoyable tool for communication. Sanders Design has created a definitive and appealing logo which will be recognised as a symbol of the Cornish Language.‘
Then on Saturday 4th June on Truro's Lemon Quay piazza, three hundred balloons emblazoned with the new logo were released into the Cornish skies, during a day of Cornish Language promotion by An Kowethas. ‘We’re promoting Cornish - a language that has been in use for thousands of years - as a living, thriving, means of expression; we‘re saying: be informed by it, appreciate it, use it.' said Dr Jenkin.
